nu metal
El nu metal es una fusión de la música heavy metal con la música rap y hip hop. Surgido a principios de los años 1990 e impulsado principalmente por grupos como Deftones y KoRn, tuvo su auge durante los años 1999, 2000 y 2001 con la aparición de muchísimas bandas.
Características
El nu metal tiene una base de heavy metal a la cual se incorporan numerosas influencias, por lo que frecuentemente es considerado un subgénero del Alternative metal. Aparte de las claras influencias de hip hop y rap presentes en el estilo, el nu metal, como el resto de géneros del heavy metal, es difícil de categorizar. Los elementos comunes del estilo son riffs simples, guitarras "down tuned", elementos pop (formas predecibles, estructuras convencionales de canciones, melodías pegadizas) y dinámicas de parada-comienzo (fraseo duro con estribillos suaves o al revés). Otros elementos presentes a veces son el uso de técnicas de disc jockey (algunos grupos incluyen un DJ en su formación) y el uso de samples.
Los grupos Deftones y KoRn son considerados los inventores del estilo, mientras que grupos como Faith No More, Rage Against The Machine, Dog Eat Dog o Cubanate son calificados como precursores del género. Algunos fans apuntan también influencias de bandas anteriores a estas, por ejemplo Prong, Tool, o Nine Inch Nails.
Voces
En los años 90, algunas bandas comenzaron a mezclar el parafraseo del rapping y otras técnicas con las guitarras y baterías propias del heavy metal. El resultado fue la necesidad de los fans y críticos de diferenciar la musica heavy metal tradicional y la nueva rama de grupos que usaban samples, DJs, rapeos y Batería programada. El "New metal" ("metal nuevo" en inglés) evolucionó a "nu metal".
De todas maneras, se sigue manteniendo una diferenciación entre el rap metal, el rapcore y el nu metal. El rap metal normalmente se considera al estilo de metal con voces puras de rap -- con poca mezcla de otros estilos. Rapcore y nu metal son basicamente la misma cosa: guitarras distorsionadas con baterías y voces influenciadas por el rap. Es también clásico una voz aproximada a los gritos típicos del hardcore. Otros estilos de voz que se pueden encontrar son: rapear, voz clara y varios tipos de gritos.
El heavy metal es, sin duda, más orientado a la guitarra que el nu metal. El heavy metal incluye solos de guitarra muy intrincados y técnicos y un buen número de riffs complejos que llevan casi todo el peso de la canción mientras que los grupos de nu metal prestan más atención a otros aspectos; la guitarra es, en general, más simple, con pocos solos o riffs complicados, creando el sonido único de las guitarras de nu metal con guitarras afinadas muy graves y con cuerdas sueltas, creando más distorsión. El grupo Machine Head, en su álbum de 1994, Burn My Eyes, fueron una de las primeras bandas en usar este tipo de guitarras, aunque ellos si incorporaban un número significativo de solos a sus canciones.
En general, las lineas de bajo del heavy metal son bastante simples, normalmente solamente siguiendo la nota tónica en el riff de la guitarra. (Con notables excepciones, como Cliff Burton de Metallica, cuyas lineas de najo eran mucho más complicadas) En el nu metal, sin embargo, los bajistas tienden a usar lineas más complicadas, frecuentemente con influencias de jazz. El bajista de Limp Bizkit, Sam Rivers, por ejemplo, vivió en un ambiente de jazz background, al igual que su batería John Otto.
La batería nu metal está orientada a los complejos "breakbeats" (Español: ritmos partidos) del hip hop. De hecho, muchas de las bandas más conocidas incluyen un DJ en su formación el cual contribuye con ritmos sampleados y otros efectos. Alguno de estos DJs son DJ Lethal de Limp Bizkit o Joe Hahn de Linkin Park.
